Holocaust Memorial Day - Auschwitz-Birkenau I Video

30.1.20

In relation to Holocaust Memorial Day which passed on Monday 27th January, this is a day in which we remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust under the Nazi persecution. This year marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

I was chosen to be a part of the Project for the Higher Education Trust and the Lessons from Auschwitz institution during my A-Levels and had the opportunity to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau I and II (camp III does not exist anymore). I made a video as part of my project for the LFA and to show you what the camp looks like if you don't have the opportunity to visit and I think it is very important to remember the past and to learn from it.

I had the opportunity to go to Poland in 2013 and visit the famous German Nazi concentration and extermination camp called Auschwitz, it was the largest camp to be built and 1.1 million men, women and children lost their lives there. I went for free as apart of the organisation Holocaust Educational Trust - Lessons from Auschwitz (HET/LFA), two people from my 6th form including myself got to go to Poland with many students from other schools. But before we were allowed to embark on this journey we had to attend a couple of workshops to develop our understanding of what happened back then and how it affects us to this day. As well as producing a video diary of my trip to Poland, I also wrote a personal statement of my thoughts during this trip, you can check it out here.
