How to Make that Internet Coffee Drink: Dalgona Coffee Recipe

18.4.20

Are you even on lockdown if you haven't tried the famous Dalgona Coffee yet?

The latest social media trend has everyone in quarantine making Dalgona Coffee. If you are curious about the origin story of said drink, some googling revealed that the drink itself originated from India, Pakistan and Macau. Actor Jung II-Woo travelled to Macau, tried the drink and gave it the nickname 'Dalgona', which shares its name and resemblance with Korea's version of Dalgona honeycomb sweets. But South Asia has been making it long before, just under a different name. It's called 'Phenti Hui Coffee' (Whipped Coffee or Beaten Coffee). But no matter what it is called, it still is a whipped coffee consisting of four ingredients.

It turned out pretty well for my first try, so I thought I would share my recipe for a fluffy, whipped Dalgona coffee with you. It is definitely a lot easier to make than it looks and all you need is instant coffee, sugar, water, milk and electric mixer or a whisk.

The ration of ingredients is super simple 1:1:1
  • 2 tbsp. caster sugar
  • 2 tbsp. instant coffee or espresso powder
  • 2 tbsp. very hot water (boiling water damages the coffee)
  • 1 cup of milk of your choice
Step 1 - Pour the caster sugar, coffee and water into a mixing bowl or mug (latter as it is easier when using an electric whisk so it avoids mixture going anywhere).

Step 2 - Mix with a whisk by hand (and risk feeling the ache for 3 days after) or just grab a small hand-mixer and let it do the work for you. You want to aim for a mixture that is lighter brown, flurry and holds stiff peaks when the whisk is removed.

Step 3 - Add ice and milk to a cup or heat the milk if desired. I personally use chilled oat milk, my favourite vegan milk for coffee and breakfast is Oatly and I cannot recommend it enough. Spoon dollops of the frothed coffee mixture on top and smooth out with a spoon. Mix thoroughly to enjoy!

A FEW NOTES:
  • You won't be able to get the fluffiest results as seen in videos and photos if you reduce the amount of sugar. However, you can reduce the sugar to 1 tbsp and it will still be pretty tasty.
  • You can use an electric mixer or whisk by hand, but risk an arm ache with the latter!
  • I definitely would not have this every day as it has quite a lot of sugar. I may replace the sugar with zero-calorie caramel syrup and I shall let you know how that goes.

Et voila!

Stay safe and wash your hands! Let me know how you’re doing in the comments!

Skincare

Boots Smooth Care
Info: Shave Gel Legs and Body for normal skin with shea butter // The rich creamy lather will help to improve razor glide and reduce those nasty nicks and cuts. // Dermatologically tested // Recyclable packaging
My POV: This shave gel works really well and a small bit goes a very long way so use minimally.
Repurchase? You cannot purchase the shave gel for normal skin as Boots has discontinued it, however, they sell the sensitive skin shave gel with aloe vera! I am personally going to start using coconut oil now as a shave balm.

Info: The Shea Nourishing Body Butter is enriched with Community Trade shea butter from Ghana
// This iconic Body Butter is now even richer, with the butter of 36 shea nuts in every tub. Enjoy the warming, nutty scent and indulgently rich texture, that melts into skin for 72 hours of ultra-rich moisture. // Use within 12 months of opening
My POV: The body butter is super rich, I would highly recommend it for someone who has dry or dehydrated skin. It is also non-greasy and non-sticky so you can wear your clothes straight after application. It is great for the winter months and with its nutty scent is perfect for warming up the body as a massage butter too.
Repurchase? No. Would I recommend it? 100%. Prices in size: £6.00 (50ml) £16.00 (200ml)

The Body Shop Almond Milk & Honey Body Butter

Info: Enriched with organic almond milk from Spain and Community Trade honey from Ethiopia, Almond Milk & Honey is specially formulated for sensitive, dry skin.
My POV: I much prefer this body butter to the shea butter one just because of ingredients. This butter is intensely moisturising, the fragrance is not overpowering and hypoallergenic.
Repurchase? No. Would I recommend it? 100%. In the future, I plan to purchase the hand cream version. Prices in size: £6.00 (50ml) £16.00 (200ml)

Info: We've waited 7,872 tropical hours to help ripen our coconuts before we squeeze them with shea butter and pack them into every bottle. Our products are tested on us, never on animals, paraben-free and we're proud to be Vegan too.
My POV: One of my favourite brands is the Original Source as their packing is 100% recyclable and use 100% renewable energy to make their products. Their products are also very budget-friendly, the only downside is that the smell doesn't linger for long but that just might be because I use a more overpowering body lotion.
Repurchase? Yes. Price: £1.05 (250ml)

Superdrug Hand Cream 2 in 1 Strengthens Nails & Moisturises Hands/Hands & Nail Cream

Info: Enriched with Pro-Vitamin B5 and Sweet Almond Oil, is specially formulated to nourish and moisturise hands, whilst helping to strengthen nails and smooth cuticles.
My POV: The product has a thick heavy non-greasy texture which is great because it is deeply moisturising, I felt it strengthening my nails, so a little goes a long way. It is also budget-friendly.
Repurchase? Price: £1.49 (75ml)

Beauty

Info: This product does contain an AHA which makes you skin more sensitive in the sun, however, you should wear sunscreen on your face anyway. Also, contains a Tasmanian pepperberry derivative to reduce inflammation, as well as ginseng root and aloe vera to enhance radiance and offer soothing benefits. // Use within 12 months of opening
My POV: This product was great for my acne-prone and texturised skin. This is was the second-ever toner I have used and put all my faith back into them as I didn't see them as a necessary item in my skincare routine.
Repurchase? I would definitely buy again after I finish a couple toners already in my possession. I think this product is so much easier to get your hands on than many years back when I first purchased it and I was put on a waiting list! Price: £6.80 (240ml)

Lush Tea Tree Toner Water
Info: “A Powerful Spot-Zapper”. This product can be used to cleanse and tone the skin as well as it being antimicrobial and balancing for the skin with 6 main ingredients and naturally occurring essential oils.
My POV: I got recommended this product to me by one of the sales advisors, it is a multi-purpose spray that can be used to prime and set makeup, also as a toner for those with acne-prone skin or as a way to refreshing mist for the face.
Repurchase? I am open-minded about repurchasing this in the future. Price: £6.00 (100g)

The Ordinary. Salicylic Acid 2% Solution

Info: This powerful and concentrated treatment is for blemish-prone skin is ideal for oily, congested skin.
My POV: At a surprisingly tiny price and packaging this mighty product does pack a punch. I noticed a huge difference when I started using this on my face and my spots started clearing up. I would recommend when using this product that you also use an SPF as with any The Ordinary product and in your skincare routine in general.
Repurchase? Definitely would be purchasing this again in the near future. Price: £4.20 (30ml)

Simple Sensitive Skin Experts Kind to Skin Eye Make-up Remover
Info: removes waterproof mascara. Made with the perfect blend of skin-loving ingredients, micellar water and Pro-Vitamin B5, it's a gentle yet effective face cleanser. It's also oil-free formula, which is non-greasy and won't leave behind residue
My POV: This is a firm favourite in the beauty community for those who can't spend a lot on their products. I have been using Simple products on and off for the last decade or so and it's great at removing makeup. I use this as an eye makeup remover only as I use my Liz Earle Hot Cloth cleanser to remove full faces of makeup. This product is tough on stubborn makeup, even waterproof mascara while being gentle on skin and eyelashes.
Repurchase? Yes. Price: £3.80 (125ml)

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
Info: Multifunctional Brightening Formula // Azelaic Acid is produced naturally by yeast that lives on normal skin // It is a multi-functional support ingredient for all skin types and also acts as an effective antioxidant.
My POV: I bought this with many other The Ordinary products as I went a little spend happy, however, while the product is a great lightweight gel-cream, I felt like it didn't do much for me. I noticed a little difference in texture but not much and it didn't reduce the redness on my face caused by my acne.
Repurchase? No. Price: £5.50 (30ml)

Cicapair Derma Green Solution – DR. JART Tiger Grass Colour Correcting Treatment SPF
Info: Is the all-in-one treatment that includes a colour-changing capsule within the formula to cover blemishes and restore the look of the skin's strength, health, and vitality.
My POV: I got a little tester pot in my ASOS advent calendar and I was very excited to start using this, it blends very well into the skin and I used it as a colour corrector before applying my makeup. It helped to cover the redness from my spots and smells amazing. It provides SPF 30 protection from UV light and it gave my skin more of a healthy glow.
Repurchase? I would wait till it was available at a better price - Price: £17.89 (15ml)

RIMMEL LONDON Clear Complexion/teint Radieux Clarifying Powder
Info: Our matte powder promises to give you a silky-smooth complexion whilst keeping breakouts at bay.
My POV: This is probably one of the worst powders I have ever used, I bought it and got home and it was smashed to bits. It made my makeup look cakey and didn't help with the transfer as it only lasts for 5 hours.
Repurchase? No. Price £3.90 (16g)

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer Oil-Free
Info: Travel size foundation and concealer primer, great for all complexions and skin types.  With a silky, lightweight blend of vitamins A and E, grape seed extract and green tea.
My POV: This seems to be a favourite in the makeup world, however, I found it to be a terrible product is doing its job to keep makeup on your face. I would experience makeup transfer on my clothes etc, my makeup wouldn't last as long compared to when I used other primers, I found it to be buttery texture even though it is stated as a non-greasy product. This product also clogs your pores like no tomorrow.
Repurchase? No. Price: £9.99 (7.1ml)

Haircare

Info: Help keep your hair looking healthy and shielded from heat damage up to 230°C. // The product also protects and seals in shine. // Also contains a UV filter // Use within 12 months of opening
My POV: I don't hate this product but I have used much better heat protectant sprays than this one and also I have heard a lot of negative stuff recently about ingredients in TRESemme products, therefore, I will be boycotting and looking towards more natural and 'free' products.
Repurchase? No. Price: £2.50 (300ml)

Other

Avon Perfume - Perceive Eau de Parfum Spray - 50ml

My POV: This was a gift for my 17th or 18th birthday from my friend Iqra. I think this perfume is a great gift for someone who is a preteen just because of the price point and that it wasn't as concentrated in smell as compared to more expensive perfumes.

Repurchase? No. Price: £7.00 (50ml) was £10.00

MUGLER ANGEL MUSE
Info: Top notes - Grapefruit, Red Berries Heart notes - Hazelnut cream-cocoa Base notes - Vetiver, Patchouli

Next Just Pink Eau De Parfum

Info: Just Pink will make you feel confident and uplifted through its beautiful blend of soft fruity mandarin, green florals and pink blooming jasmine cushioned by patchouli and musks.
My POV: I got this as a gift for my birthday many years ago from my aunt. This perfume smells amazing which is surprising for a high street perfume. It's a very feminine, fresh and floral fragrance. This would make a perfect gift for someone younger.
Repurchase? No Longer Available. Replacement - Next Just Pink Eau De Parfum Price: £8 (30ml)
