Ask Italian

9.3.16

Hello All,

Last night I went out to Ask Italian for the first time, can you believe!? So I am just going to write up a quick review of the place. My first impression of the place was that it was nice and simply decorated with a slight Pinterest feel to it. It was pretty empty so we got a table right away, I went out with a couple of my close friends from university for a overdue face-to-face catch up.

The only downside was the service, even though the food came out relatively quickly, when it came to paying, the staff took ages to acknowledge us and we were probably sitting their for an hour even though we told them we were done and wanted to pay when they collected our dishes.

But the great thing is that we got 40% off because of NUS student discount, so who are we to complain!! So we had a three course meal for under £20 each. :D

The array of starters we ordered

Calamari ringlets of baby fried squid served with a wedge of lemon and garlic mayo (also a great dip for the dough balls)

Baked Dough Balls with Balsamic dip we chose to have the Frontal cheese and chilli (lack of chilli) but you can also have pepperoni or a mix of the two. Better than Pizza Express for sure, nicely baked on the outside soft and chewy on the inside.

Croquettes, a new edition to the menu. Stuffed with cheeses and vegetables served with a spicy tomato and basil dip. It was delicious and surprisingly green inside!

Mushroom Al Forno, mushrooms stuffed with various cheeses, covered with breadcrumbs baked on Italian bread and served with garlic mayo. The mushrooms were cooked to perfection, but the bread was a little hard/crunchy.

Left: Penne Al Pollo Della Casa
Right: Spaghetti Al Pomodoro

Left: Rigatoni Con Zucchine E Pesto with Chicken.
Right: Ravioli Marittimi

The food was delicious and well cooked. They had many options for meat-eaters and Pescatarians, but lacked options for vegetarians or vegans. I had the Spaghetti Al Pomodoro and was a basic spaghetti dish served with a tomato sauce, but the best thing about the dish was the buffalo mozzarella.

Left: Italian cheesecake with raspberry sorbet
Right: Honeycomb cheesecake with vanilla ice cream

Now the best part of the meal and which deserves its own food group: Dessert!
I had the Italian cheesecake which was fluffy and creamy and balanced out the sweet raspberries.
We also ordered the Honeycomb cheesecake (based on a new recipe), the Chocolate Amore and the Pistachio and olive oil cake (a new edition to the menu and won the Great Taste 2015 award).
